This video breaks down all the current issues with setting up the Broadlink RM pro and RM mini 3 in the EU and contains some Big News for EVERYBODY! This video also explains why you can’t control RF using the UK Alexa Skill / EU Alexa Skill, and Why the Broadlink RM Pro and Broadlink RM Mini 3 won’t work with Google Home for those regions. There are some workarounds for how to fix issues with the Broadlink RM pro and RM mini 3 in the mean-time and some official time scales from Broadlink themselves for fixes.
This video also gives a little history of Broadlink and my channel in general.

    ACTS

*The RM Plugin no longer works with Alexa.* I have no idea what changed or what happened but one day in September 2019 *EVERYTHING* controlled by RM Plugin refused to operate via Alexa. Alexa would either say "XYZ is not responding, check it's power supply and network connection" or 'I'm sorry but ..." or it would act like it worked but nothing happened. This *ONLY* applied to the things controlled by RM Plugin on Android (and I had a backup installation on another device where it didn't work either) and did not apply to my Leviton, Wemo, etc. devices. All the things that used their own skills worked fine, anything that used RM Pro died. IN the RM Plugin app everything still worked, if I clicked on an Alexa device and tapped the "test" buttons for the commands the test worked without fail. Clearly the issue is somewhere between RM Plugin and Alexa. The RM Plugin, RM Pro and RM Mini all worked OK with the IHC app and with the test features of RM Plugin, none of it was any longer recognized by nor controlled by Alexa. I can only think that something changed out there somewhere in cyberspace. The thing is, there are going to be an awful lot of people who don't know about our friend Paul here and who now think their Broadlink devices are broken when they're not. They work just fine after you follow Paul's instructions on how to get them working again (which is in another video). In fact, if anything it all works better now. Thanks for all you do, Paul, I would never have even tried home automation/smart home without the videos you post which both educate and entertain so well. I had a couple of smart switches on some lights but it just costs too much to buy smart switches for everything and using the BroadLink stuff is a far, far more economical solution.

Thanks mate! 😁 Yes it works much better these days. I haven't used it with the Google home for a while, but you will definitely need the EU version of IHC if you're Google account is set to an EU location, otherwise it won't discover the devices. Aside from that you should find the Google home service is called "IHC for EU" and it will detect devices you created in the IHC for EU app. I think it still only discovers lamps and TVs, so you may need to use those options for training your devices! Hope that helps. -P

    • Chaz Mills
      Chaz Mills

I though it may be something like that but got around it in the end. Soldered two wires directly to the buttons and connected them to a doctored Sonoff basic each. Like the garage idea I had to cut a slot and bridge the gap to provide a “no power” switch. The newer ones are a bit more difficult to cut but i already have one on my garage door and one on my main gate without any problems. The BroadLink controls the AC and fan but it wasn’t worth buying a Pro, I could have got the basic one.

    • Paul Hibbert
      Paul Hibbert

I am thankful that I have no hair to pull. Unfortunately I think Somfy use "rolling codes" to deliberately trick 3rd party remotes so that they can peddle you their own solution through force :( You other RF remotes should be fine as long as they're not made by companies that deliberately block 3rd party control; You're quite unlucky as it's a rarity these days that a company bothers with the hassle of creating devices that use rolling codes.

Don't blame GDPR - it's important legislation to protect our privacy from spying eyes, something the US government doesn't care about. GDPR standards were first published in 2016 - companies had TWO YEARS to make sure they were compliant. Lazy ones like, obviously, Broadlink, did nothing about it, and just switched things off in a panic AFTER the rules came into force. Broadlink sounds like an innovative, but totally shambolic business.

    • Paul Hibbert
      Paul Hibbert

It's weird, because before GDPR my life was exactly like it is now, only way less annoying. It's not like GDPR came in and all of a sudden I was safe from prying eyes is it? GDPR was a massive over-reaction to a tiny problem. My life is exactly the same as it was before but instead of the rare and occasional pop up for an advert, I am now guaranteed a pop up of someone telling me they value my privacy, followed by an advert. Great.

Hi Paul, thanks for the info and taking the time to mail Broadlink, i have the blackbean in the UK, i got a hunch that the Broadlink EU server is having data storage issues (GDPR?) because i cannot link IHC EU in alexa skill with the email & p/w that i used to create my account in IHC andriod app, I can only link/bind the accounts in alexa using the sign in using FB option!, and to make things worse, once accounts and skills are binded , alexa cannot detect the blackbean device :$, am i missing something???

Hi Paul, have been using the Broadlink RM+ with the RM Plugin and the e-Control app for a long time with complete success and it's been wonderful. Went to add some new devices today and now Alexa says it can't find any new devices. No matter what I add. So I tried migrating over to the IHC app and now not only can I not discover new devices but all the existing ones say they are not responding but activate (or deactivate) anyway! Super sad about it. Have you had any trouble adding new devices lately?

Hi Paul, BTW really enjoy your video's and although I have an Alexa it's relegated to the bedroom for streaming music and as a Bluetooth speaker mainly when using my tablet in bed for VN-my or other Video Media. For home automation I rely on my Google Home, a RM3 Mini and a couple of Wifi Plugs, nothing too sophisticated but it made life so easy to use an ihc scene to change the input on my old none smart TV. But since the GDPR issue you highlighted, it has been nothing but frustration, on the old ihc Account it still lists all the devices and scenes, but even though Google Home acknowledges the command and states actioning the RM3 remains inactive, but manually selecting the scene from the ihc App stills works. Trying the now available ihc EU App, brings slightly different issues, only the devices, not the scenes (I added a new scene in the new App to see if this helped, NOT) are seen by Google Home, but Google states they are not available. I love voice control and home automation when it works, but when it doesn't it's like finding a needle in a haystack, there is nothing to indicate at what stage in the process things are failing. Please keep up the dialogue with Broadlink as it can only be a good thing and can't wait your video letting us know it all works again :)

      Paul Hibbert

I tried the Sonoff, but found that it could only control a few of my devices. I'd got a couple of different brands of socket it couldn't control, but worse than that it couldn't control my Home Easy mains dimmers :( It also didn't have IFTTT or Widget support where as all the other Sonoff devices did, and that killed it for me.

1st of October and my RM Pro still doesnt recognise my electric projector screen RF control.....I am not going to change my location to USA.

    • Paul Hibbert
      Paul Hibbert

Both my Projector screens turned out to be imports from the US (unbeknownst to me). The residential frequency for RF over there is 315Mhz, where as ours is 433Mhz. The RM pro has a transmitter in it capable of controlling only 433Mhz because our military use the 315Mhz band, it's technically illegal to transmit on 315Mhz in the EU. In the US Broadlink ship their RM pro's with a 315Mhz transmitter because their military uses the 433Mhz band. Bizarre eh? I bet your screen started out life in the US, I don't know why but it's REALLY common. You can probably find out pretty easily by taking the cover off your remote so you can see the board, it will be stamped on it. Broadlink won't sell you a US model for legal reasons, you'll probably have a hard time getting hold of one from anyone for the same reason. You can however buy a 315Mhz RF transmitter on ebay and build a raspberry Pi/Arduino that would do the same job, but it's still totally beyond me how you would wire and solder and program all that up at this stage. Maybe one day I'll have a tutorial for all that!!

Broadlink still have 2 days to make their promise be valid. They did not even get the lamp to work in the IHC EU app...so the Broadlink RM3 Pro+ is still a useless device up til now. @Paul Hibbert: Did you have any contact with Broadlink since you released this video?

    • Y. van Paassen
      Y. van Paassen

What about the RM3 Mini? Does that work with the IHC EU app? Beacude the i can at least add the IR devices i have in my house to Alexa. Or should i then also use the RM Plugin via a android phone? Have you been in contact with Broadlink about the IHS EU issues? I cannot imagine it would take that long to setup a server for the EU. Or is it just another story of Broadlink and the they hope we are stupid enough to believe that? (Sorry... i am a IT girl so for me it sounds as an excuse that it has to do with the GDPR regulations and that is the reason for the difficulties to setup a new server). IR devices also cannot be connected to the RM3 Pro+ as well, so as long as they do not setup the app to work every RM3 Pro+ device is useless to be used directly with Alexa without going the throug the RM Plugin route (which i rather not want to do as Broadlink should make us able to directly connect to Alexa or Google home like everyone in the US can as well)

Paul Hibbert I understand, but then still. I added the Table lamp from the applicances list via switch, then it asks me to pair it, then i see a screen with an 'On' and 'Off' button and a 'All on' and 'All off' button. But then i cannot reconfigure these buttons...and therefor am still not abel to connect a IR device. And with IR device i mean TV, Radio, Settop box, etc.

    • Paul Hibbert
      Paul Hibbert

Hey, you have to add one of those devices first, and then the 'lamp' is an "appliance" you can to the device. So you would add for example the RM pro+ and then add the 'lamp' to the RM Pro+ as an "appliance". Hope that makes sense

    • Y. van Paassen
      Y. van Paassen

Paul Hibbert I do not see a lamp in the IHC EU app. I have version v52. I just now unistalled the app, reinstalled it, but still no lamp in sight. Just predefinde Broadlink stuff where you need to scan the barcode to have the broadlink appliance configured. When adding device by category, the only categories i see are Smart plug with SP3, SP2-UK, SC1, and SP3S-EU, Universal Remotes with RM Pro/Pro+, RM mini 3, RM Pro, Smartclim and RM plus, Switch with TC2-1, TC2-2, TC2-3, then a small house icon with chinese text (which i cannot read what it is) with Alarm Kit, and Environment equip with e-Sensor. Alle products under these categories are Broadlink appliances.....but no generic 'Lamp' to be found to configure.

Hey Tal, Only suggestion I have is to remove from IHC, hold the reset pin in again and pair it a second time. I've had similar issues in the past where it's kind of half paired. Failing that I would recommend reserving IP addresses in your routers config for the RM pro, and your phone, and anything else that might be involved. Reserving IP resolves a lot of weird issues.

    • Paul Hibbert

Hey dude, BROADLINK DEVICES The RM pro and RM pro+ are exactly the same in form and function. I own both and they're identical in every way. Their marketing team just decided one day to call it something else, probably after a minor change to the motherboard. The RM pro and Pro+ can control both RF and Infrared devices. The Broadlink Blackbean RM mini 3 can only control Infrared signals. WHAT IS RF?: RF devices can be remote controlled using an RF remote. RF can pass through walls and is used to control light switches, plug sockets, garage doors etc. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RF 315Mhz and RF 433Mhz? 315Mhz is the RF frequency used by civilians in the US, their military uses 433Mhz and the general public is supposed to refrain from using 433Mhz. In the EU it is the opposite way around and the civilians use 433Mhz and the military use 315Mhz. ... consequently if you buy an RM pro in the EU you will automatically receive one that can control 433Mhz devices, and if you order one in the US you'll receive one that can control 315Mhz devices. WHAT IS INFRARED?: Infrared is a different spectrum from RF altogether and requires line of sight, i.e. it can't pass through walls. Infrared is the most commonly used way of remote controlling devices, most TV's and set top boxes are infrared controlled. Hope that helps! -P

I notice Broadlink have just updated the US IHC app to now handle universal remotes via Alexa and Google! ...I just prey that one day this is available in the EU version... after they get everything else working again of course!

Sorry, I meant 'User Define' (or 'Custom Panel' as they refer to it); they have posted a screen shot on Facebook highlighting the button... so fingers crossed!

Hey man! What do you mean by "Universal remotes" ? I think they class the RM pro as a universal remote which has been available in the US for quite some time. :)

US here - I'm already able to use IFTTT with my RM Pro via a number of different routes, all requiring some form of a stand-alone/always-on server though of course (such as an old Android phone - you can use Tasker, Home Assistant, Node-RED, etc. and can connect-in to IFTTT via the maker channel/webhooks. Either way, I am glad I stuck around because as always you are very entertaining/a pleasant and witty fellow :) Right now in my home, I'm using a mixture of several systems, and I'm constantly testing new ways to set things up as I discover them. Right now I use the RM plug-in app on an old Android phone and also use the Android app Tasker, along with many of the Joao AutoApp Tasker plug-in apps (it's all a bit much to wrap one's head around at first, but once you figure out how these AutoApp tools work you can really do some magical things. AutoVoice recently received a new feature update and can also directly create devices in Alexa, so perhaps that's another work-around for EU people? There are also several other methods/resources available to program your RF or IR codes into your Broadlink device and to control it, without needing the e-control or IHC apps from Broadlink - perhaps this would help EU people who don't want to wait a few weeks? There's also another Android-bridge app (I think it's called RM Bridge?) which let's you setup HTTP GET/POST requests to work with your RM device - which isn't this basically the same as IFTTT? You can connect it into IFTTT this way via webhooks/the maker channel. Anyway, this all makes my head spin 😵🤯 Paul - if you see this, there is one frustration/road-block I'm encountering in my Alexa/IoT/RM Pro RF setup that bugs me on a daily basis for which I haven't yet devised a workaround, but I know there has to be some way to fix this problem (I'm a firm believer that there is ALWAYS a work-around, if you think outside of the box enough! :-P). I'd really love to ask if you have any guidance or thoughts / solutions you've come across... So, some RF switch devices have a dedicated "On" signal as well as a dedicated "Off" signal, while others simply use the same signal to toggle devices on and off. This becomes a major pain when you throw Alexa into the loop, or in situations where you might have a two-way light switch or might have a physical switch thrown into the loop in addition to Alexa. Quite regularly, "On" and "Off" become reversed, and Alexa starts turning things on when they should be off and vice-versa. I've been able to mostly fix this by triggering a little formula/variables into the mix to keep track of device status as things are being turned on and off. I can do this a number of ways - a formula in Tasker, or Node-RED, or Home Assistant, or even IFTTT and a Google Spreadsheet (that would be kinda clunky/delayed though), and it's helped a lot. Alexa won't turn things off again if they're already off (which would toggle them "on." However, I still like to use wall switches sometimes, but this tends to mess things up. Before I came across the Broadlink/RM devices, I'd come across a similar low-cost device called the Hook Smart Home Hub, which does RF but not IR, and only works with 433MHz signals and not 315MHz. However, it has its own cloud-based portal so I don't need to run an Android app and it has direct IFTTT support. The other thing it does, which is really what this whole rambling post is about - it can act as an RF receiver as well, allowing you to use RF switches/doorbells/sensors to trigger your devices. So this works great - I have a few rooms where there are wall switches to control the lights (but they're not hard-wired switches - they're RF signal controllers) so they tell the Hook hub that the light needs to be on, and then the hub sends the signal to the light and turns it on. This makes it easy to setup two-way switches if needed and keeps Alexa from flipping the on/off states of devices if someone happens to use a wall switch. Technology wise, the Hook is way less complex than the RM Pro. I know there must be some way to also get this type of functionality from my Broadlink device. I don't know if anything I'm saying here makes sense lol, but if it does/if you've also encountered these issues, do you have any ideas/suggestions? Sadly, it seems like Hook is going bye bye/shutting down :( I wish I could snag their cloud-server software code and implement it to work with my Broadlink RM Pro device...

Hi Paul, I've been trying to get my RM Pro to control my Sharp Aquos TV but it just doesn't detect the remote either by IR or RF. A have the same problem with the Virgin Media Tivo box. I've tried this using the IHC EU app and the RM Plugin and on both when I try and teach the On/Off buttons on these devices they "time out" reading, it's as if I've not pressed anything on the remotes. I appreciate that you might not have a Sharp TV but I did notice you use a picture of the Virgin Tivo set-top box in a few of your videos so hoped you have one and could tell me how you achieved this. As it stands all I can control is a cheap £7 IR controlled colour changing light bulb I bought from B&M's

Thanks for the update regarding the RM Pro+ and the nice video. I commend you for al hard work you did to get us informed. Only thing i hope is that Broadlink will keep their promises. I really hope that they will not release another piece of rubbish/garbage in 2019...so for now, because of the negative experience i have with the RM3 Pro+ and Broadlink, and their customer support who just know how to respond with predefined answers, and the fact that Broadlink keeps selling devices for the EU market while kowing it will not work at all, and taking no responsibility in any way to have the people compensated who bought their garbage to find out it has no worth more than a shiny brick, still p**ses me off! They really need to step up to get my trust back to buy any of their devices. On the RM Pro+ RF does not work, but IR does not work as well in the IHC EU app. The only thing it let's you do is add Braodlinks own devices like switches...and i am not going to spend any more money on Broadlink devices if the main and most important device, the RM3 Pro+, does not even work.

I use IHC from the Mi Market (the Xiaomi application store). Meaning, I am linked to another Broadlink server; I imagine the American one. Why? Because, after the RGDP started, I was not able to update the Scenes and buttons. Therefore, I was somewhat forced to search a solution... Because I want to update scenes and create new ones. To note: I only own 2 Broalink RM mini 3, so only IR. And, for a long time now, I am linked to the USA servers, because I prefer to have the full package.

Another great update by a very funny man... maybe you have missed your true vocation - you should be on the stage :) I returned my RM Pro+ yesterday after a concerted effort to get RF working with Alexa... this update would have saved me a lot of time but unfortunately I only discovered it a few minutes ago. In the meantime, I did email customer support and, to be fair, they answered straight away... "Dear customer, yes, the device which learned via user-defined can't be discovered by Alexa , because Alexa is't support the user-defined. Sorry about that." Paul, for your information (and anyone else reading this), here's my response: "Thank you for settling an ongoing argument which keeps popping up on various on-line home automation forums. A lot of people give this product bad reviews because they don’t understand it’s limitations. Perhaps you should clarify this on your website, user-instructions, sales literature and inside the App itself. VN-my is a good resource for customers and there are many tutorials, particularly by one man who is trying to keep the community updated, but there is a lot of confusion particularly in relation to the different software versions available. I think you should consider these points to provide much better support for a product which has great potential."

Thanks Paul - maybe this is why my IHC has been so frustrating last couple of days. e-Control does not even support my Cisco CIS430 set-top but IHC did - until a day ago. Now, I can't even find that set-top in IHC ... and to make matters worse, IHC won't learn the IR codes for my set-top, good with everything else, but not the most important part of my entertainment system. Compared to my $89 Logitech Harmony that worked out of the box for everything, this RM Pro is just pure junk. Are there any good resources for figuring RM Pro and IHC or eControl IR programming on the net? Thanks !!!

Hi Paul. Thanks for the video. I live in Ireland but I use the US amazon store for Alexa. The broad link skill for Alexa has been acting up in the last few weeks. It can discover all my controls/lamps etc attached to both the black bean and rm pro, but will only control the items on the black bean. Keeps saying the devices on the rm pro are unavailable. I have of course reset the rm pro and install it again, but to. I avail. Have you come across this?
